Brice’s gaze followed hers downward to the apex of his jeans, and while he wasn’t at all keen that she noticed his obvious turn on, it served her right. Especially when the tip of her tongue poked through her lips as if she wanted to lick them.

Lick her lips, he told his unruly libido. Calm down.

“You really are a wicked woman,” he whispered, then moved back to the conference table and managed to sit down.

Just then his cell phone rang. He checked caller ID and took the call. “Caro, how goes it?”

“Great, fantastic, I wish you could be here to see this. Any chance of finishing early and being here?”

“Okay, what’s wrong, kiddo?”

The few moments of dead air told him she was grasping for the right words. Caroline was such an upbeat, energetic woman, he couldn’t imagine what was going on. “Caro, is it Mom, Dad?”

“God, no—sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m just overwhelmed and needed to hear your voice.”

That wasn’t normal. His sister was rarely overwhelmed with any task. “I’m all yours. Hey, did you get the waterfall to work without splashing the riders?”

“Yes, we built up the faux rocks, and covered them with moss so they don’t splash back as much. It’s a fun float, with all the jungle animals and birds. One rider is going to handle a boa.”

He heard the shiver in her voice. “Are you walking the route with the float?”

“You bet. I want to see the crowd’s reactions and see how the float moves.”

“As if you didn’t figure all that out already, I bet you have computer models with stress loads for sway and bounce.”

She laughed and he felt better.

“Yeah, all of that, but still—“

“Honey, I know it’s your biggie, and I know you’re more than up to the challenge. You’re going to have so many orders you’ll get to pick and choose.”

Caro laughed again and his lips curved in response.

“Okay, you’ve fixed me. Love you, big bro.”

More dead air. She was done.

He disconnected.

A pang of something akin to homesickness flooded Brice. So many times his commitment to the military had to come first. Sure, he was usually able to schedule leave for important events, but the job came first. And now it was going to be like that again.

Not if you have the right people in your company.

He’d thought about that aspect day and night since he’d decided to leave the service and create Vader and start a business. He knew several fellow officers and non-coms he wanted and had already approached. Some of his chosen were available within weeks and others he’d have to wait on. But with Vader’s price tag of three-quarters to a cool million including support, he needed the best.

Jen was the best, but he was pretty sure she wasn’t going to abandon ForceOne.

Maybe Boulder was the city in which to headquarter his business. It had the technology base, the geeks to support it, and the lifestyle here was next to none. The mountains, skiing, hiking, camping.
